Blog 1: The Absolutely True Diary Of A Part Time Indian

Junior is a geek teenage boy who has a unique, heart-warming and a life-changing story. He is funny, and I think he is very smart for his condition. He has the ability to provoke laughter and tears, happiness and outrage with his life story. He likes to observe people and the unexpected depths of the most normal teens. Junior sees himself different from everybody and has lots of disadvantages compared to other normal people, but is still willing to adapt and to fit in to a group of people who are not the same race as his. People think he is weird and the greatest geek in school. People in school likes to tease and beat him simply because he came from a different race, which is I think a very big issue in every place. I never had a diary before because I used to think that diaries are just for girls, and kids from our school will tease me if they find out that I have one. In this story, I think Junior keeps a diary, so that he’ll be able to say what is in his mind and heart. Along with this, he wants to introduce people to different cultures and how people represent their culture, and also to take pride of your own background. His diary lets young adults to build their own self-esteem, believe in their dreams and pursue their goals, and also to believe in their capabilities to take chances in order to survive and to succeed. We should always remember that life is a constant struggle between being an individual and being a member of the community. We would always want to fit in, we would always want to belong. But we should always keep in mind that being ourselves is more important. As long as we don’t do harm to others.

“I think the world is a series of broken dams and floods, and my cartoon are tiny little lifeboats” : is one of nicest line in Alexie’s story. This emphasizes how hard it is to live life. Life is never easy; people around you will try to put you down. Sometimes, life is too hard; situations are too rough, that we think, everything is falling apart. But you know, this story will tell us, how lucky we are, and how we need to appreciate all the things that we have right now, and some people like Junior doesn’t have such things that we have. I consider God, my family and my friends as the greatest “lifeboats” of my life. They are the one who helps me and guides me during the hard times in my life. My strong faith to God is what keeps me going every day. The support and love from my family, are my inspirations in doing good and striving harder in spite of all the difficulties that I’m experiencing in life.

“I draw because words are too unpredictable. I draw because words are too limited. If you speak and write in English, or Spanish, or Chinese, or any language, then only a certain percentage of human beings will get you meaning. But when you draw a picture, everybody can understand it. If I draw a cartoon of a flower, then every man, woman, and child in the world can look at it and say, “That’s a flower.” (Alexie 5). I like this quote because it means so much and has a deep meaning, especially if it’s coming from a kid. It is true that it’s very hard to express what you want to say, others might have a hard time understanding what you are trying to say, others might not understand what language you are using, others are too young to understand the situation. But if you try to draw a picture, everybody will understand what you are trying to say. It is true that words are sometimes unpredictable. I don’t see anything wrong about this quote, because for me, it is one of the best quotes in this story.

  1. I like the quote you chose. It was my favorite qoute too. I'm someone who enjoys writing so this qoute hit close to home when he says "words are too limited", but I find it true and am already applying it to my life.
